As a chiropractor, I work with your nervous system to help restore your health. If you can remember your basic sciences in middle school, you know that the brain controls every function in the body. It tells your body parts what to do, when to do it, when to stop, etc. It communicates with the rest of your body through your nerves. There is a nerve going to every single cell in your body, telling your heart to beat, lungs to breathe, your toenails to grow, and even tells your appendix to do whatever an appendix does. When these nerves are irritated or pinched, whatever organ or structure it goes to will not function properly. If 100% function is the true definition of health, then having pinched nerves means you are not healthy!
Only 10% of the nerves in the body are responsible for pain, leaving 90% responsible for the different functions of the body (digestion, respiration, immune system, etc). While a pinched nerve can cause some significant pain (like sciatica or a headache), most of the time it is affecting an organ or a body part where there is no noticeable symptoms until the problem progresses (degeneration, heart disease, cancer).
Once these pinched nerves, or subluxations as we call them, are identified using my hands or x-rays, I give what’s called an adjustment to restore the bone back to its natural position and motion. This takes the pressure off the nerve, allowing the body to take over and heal itself. A large part of chiropractic relies on the body’s ability to be self regulating, and self healing.
