Massage therapy addresses a variety of health conditions, the most prevalent being stress-related tension, which, experts believe, accounts for 80%-90% of disease. Massage has been proven beneficial in treating cancer-related fatigue, sleep disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes, low back pain, immunity suppression, spinal cord injury, autism, post-operative surgery, age-related disorders, infertility, eating disorders, smoking cessation, and depression, to name just a few.

As a massage therapist, I was aware of some of the benefits of chiropractic care. I would even occasionally suggest that a particular client find a chiropractor they were comfortable with. Ask the Doctor

“What role does obesity play in frequent back pain problems?”

The answer is: Probably no surprise here. Obesity certainly does play a role in nagging back pain and it comes down to the extra load your spine/body is forced to carry around at all times, in all positions, when lifting, when doing routine tasks, etc., and this certainly breaks down the body.

In fact, talk to most chiropractors and they’ll say that about 80% of chronic back pain patients are overweight or have obesity problems.

Study Looks at 6,000 Patients

and the Role that Obesity Plays

in Back Pain

There was a study published in the June 2003 issue of Spine that showed essentially that back pain may not go away because of excess weight. If you think you fall into this camp, read closely because this could be rather life-changing and one more reason to go on a fitness program aided with supplements. In this study they analyzed 6,000 patients from three practices. They had them complete a questionnaire and those that rated their back pain as chronic were also found to have excess weight.

On page 4 of our newsletter, you’ll find my monthly Fitness article that can motivate, inspire, and get you ready to lose excess weight in a fun way. Check it out! Of course, bigger picture, we have a philosophy of treating the whole person which would include Chiropractic combined with fitness and a nutritional program/plan tailored to the individual case.

If you or someone you know has been feeling in pain for more than 48 hours, please seek a chiropractor immediately. We’re only a phone a call away. Life is so sweet without pain!
